BREAKING THE MOLD

How I Made It and How You Can Too

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you might be a lot like I was. Maybe you weren’t a dance comp kid, didn’t immediately memorize every new cast album, or felt pulled in different directions by multiple interests growing up. Perhaps you even thought that without a BFA in Musical Theatre, a performance career was out of reach. I’m here to tell you that’s not true.

I wasn’t the stereotypical theatre kid either. Sure, I loved musicals and singing, but I didn’t know every lyric to every show tune. I took dance lessons but wasn’t competing every weekend. My time was split between school musicals, sports, and a bunch of other passions. You may have heard the saying, "If you can be happy doing anything else, do that," but what kind of advice is that?? I never liked it from the moment I first heard it. First of all, I hope we can all be happy doing many things! And secondly, isn’t our individuality what makes each of us so beautifully interesting?? We are multifaceted individuals, so why should we limit ourselves? It was this thinking that led me to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at a liberal arts college instead of a BFA in Musical Theatre. At 17 years old, I wasn’t entirely sure theatre was my professional calling just yet, so I wasn’t ready to shut every other door. But my love for singing was undeniable, and it ended up leading me down an incredible path.

If you’re feeling behind or unsure because you didn’t follow the “traditional” route, take a breath. I’ve been there. But now I’m here to tell you that it’s still possible to build a successful career in musical theatre and even book Broadway - I know because I did just that!

So if you want to do theatre, GO FOR IT!
And if you have no idea how to make it happen, I'm here to help.

P.S. To the stereotypical theatre kids who have always known every lyric to every cast album and maybe even have a BFA already: You’re of course welcome here too! Your passion and dedication are incredible assets, and I’m excited to live in your joy with you and help you harness that passion into power that can make your dreams come true!
